15 CHS students receive band scholarships
Fifteen Clinton High School seniors from the Clinton Band received scholarship offers to participate in a college marching band.
Six members received scholarship offers for band to Hinds Community College, and nine members received offers to Mississippi State University, University of Mississippi, Delta State University, Mississippi College, Jackson State University, University of Southern Mississippi, and University of Memphis.
Band Director Kevin Welborn said he was not surprised at the seniors’ success. “The students have definitely put in the work for it,” he said.
To qualify for a scholarship, students had to audition in front of judges at each of the colleges they applied to, maintain a certain grade point average and other criteria, he said.
This year, the school’s band program includes 215 members, from grades 9 to 12. Band is almost a year-long commitment for the students, Welborn said. During the fall, the marching band performs at football games, regional and national competitions, and in the winter and spring, members participate in local and regional competitions, concerts and parades.
Clinton Band is concluding its auditioning process for the 2018-19 year and will begin summer rehearsals in June to prepare for the marching season.
