CHS names six STAR Students for 2018

CLINTON — Six seniors at Clinton High School scored 35 or 36 on the American College Test and have been designated STAR Students for 2018.
STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Both ACT scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school’s STAR Students, said Vickie Powell of Jackson, senior vice president of foundations for the Mississippi Economic Council.
“The STAR program encourages and promotes academic achievement among Mississippi’s high school seniors,” she said.
Each STAR Student is asked to select a STAR Teacher, the teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s academic achievement. CHS STAR Students and Teachers include:
- Patrick Vinzant, 35 on the ACT, chose as his STAR Teacher Allene Vinzant. Patrick plans to attend the University of Alabama at Huntsville to pursue a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, followed by graduate studies in research and development. He has a full scholarship to UAH.
- Tanner DeYoung, 36 on the ACT, chose as his STAR Teacher Justin Odom. Tanner plans to attend Mississippi State University and study biochemistry. He has full scholarships through National Merit and the Provost Scholarship program at MSU.
- Herleen Kaur, 35 on the ACT, chose as her STAR Teacher Sarah Hankins. Herleen plans to attend Duke University and major in biology and pre-med. She has scholarships through National Merit and the US Presidential Scholars program.
- Mary Madison Pevey, 35 on the ACT, chose as her STAR Teacher Dave Fehr. Mary Madison plans to attend Mississippi College and major in pre-med and biology She received a Presidential Scholar with Distinction scholarship from MC as well as a Distinguished Young Woman scholarship.
- Michael Franks, 36 on the ACT, chose as his STAR Teacher Zach Osborn. Michael plans to attend the University of Mississippi and major in biology, with plans to attend medical school. He has a full scholarship to Ole Miss and will be a student in the Honors College.
- Wesley Thomas, 35 on the ACT, chose as his STAR Teacher Angel Olinger. Wesley plans to attend Mississippi College and major in biology and pre-dental with a minor in business. He received a Presidential Scholar with Distinction scholarship from MC, and also a scholarship for scoring in the top 2 percent at the MC Math & Science Tournament.
More than 500 STAR Students and STAR Teachers will be honored at MEC’s M.B. Swayze Foundation Celebration on April 12 at the Jackson Convention Complex. The top 20 STAR Students — the ALL STAR Scholars — will receive scholarships and their STAR Teachers will receive awards provided by the Kelly Gene Cook Sr. Charitable Foundation.
