Sumner Hill Peer Leadership Committee focuses on student leadership

Heather NortonOctober 6, 2021

Once a month, 33 freshmen meet with Sumner Hill guidance counselor Heather Norton to participate in Sumner Hill’s Peer Leadership Committee.

“These students have a passion for leadership,” Norton said. “We meet monthly to plan our month’s theme and find creative ways to encourage students, teachers and faculty members.”

For the first three months of school, the focus has been on building a foundation of community inside the school building.

“We’ve focused welcoming new students and bringing awareness to suicide prevention in August and September, and for October, we’re focusing on bullying prevention.”

The group created signs to welcome students as they enter the building wrote hand-written encouraging notes to pass out.

In November and December, the group will focus on gratitude and generosity.

The second semester will focus on positive relationships, college and careers, mental health awareness and teacher appreciation.

“We’ve also adopted a first grade class at Clinton Park that our students have started writing notes to, encouraging them to do their best. The first-graders will also write notes back to our freshmen students, so it’s great to see that connection from one campus to another,” she said.

Part of the Peer Leadership Committee’s partnership with Clinton Park will be to read to the first grade class during Read Across America Week.

“I’m very proud of these students and their desire to lead their peers to make positive decisions,” Norton said.
