CHS general music students keep time during hands-on percussion exercise
September 28, 2021
Students in Carol Joy Sparkman’s general music class participated in a unique hands-on experience on Monday, September 27.
Percussionist Dr. Brian Cheeseman led the class in a percussion exercise, fully equipped with bongos, djembes, congas, tambourines and even a shaker or two.
The class created unique beats, exploring the dynamics of various percussion instruments from around the world.
“Aside from Dr. Cheeseman teaching drumming techniques and rhythm patterns to the students,” Sparkman said, “he also gave historical and geographical facts about each instrument.”
Sparkman said she enjoys directing choral music at CHS but also loves getting to cultivate an educated appreciation for music in her General Music classes.
“The world needs audience members who understand the work that musicians do in preparing for a performance,” Sparkman said, “and hands-on learning gives our students an opportunity to experience what performers experience.”
The class has already been visited by Sybil Cheeseman, former principal flautist with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, who played for the students and answered questions about her instrument.
“Next quarter, we will begin studying Music Theatre,” Sparkman said. “We will have a question-and-answer session with the production staff at New Stage Theatre in Jackson, and the students will develop a musical concept of their own.”
