Northside students use real world math skills in classroom
Second grade students in Elizabeth Wilson's class at Northside Elementary put their math skills to the test during a unit on counting money.
Mrs. Wilson has used her "Pretend Vending Machine" for close to three years to challenge her students' coin counting skills.
"This activity gives them a real-world association with the math skills we've learned in class," Wilson said. "When they see the big vending machine hanging up, they know it's going to be a fun day, and it just makes counting a little more real to them."
Wilson said her 21 students enjoy the lesson and are always excited that they have the freedom to choose their item with the coins assigned to them.
"The snack theme is definitely the most exciting one each year," she said. "They love the holiday themed lessons, but the snack theme is always their favorite."
