Band students receive more than $160K in scholarships
Out of 34 senior band students at Clinton High School, 24 have chosen to continue marching and performing in collegiate bands, resulting in a scholarship pool of over $160,000.
Director of Bands, Kevin Welborn is not surprised at the seniors’ success.
“These students have definitely put in the work for it,” he said. To qualify for a scholarship, students had to audition in front of judges at each of the colleges they applied to, maintain a certain grade point average and other criteria, he said.
These students began their band pursuits as early as sixth grade in the Clinton Public School District. This year, the school’s band program includes 220 members, from grades 9 to 12. Band is almost a year-long commitment for the students, Welborn said.
During the fall, the marching band performs at football games, regional and national competitions, and in the winter and spring, members participate in local and regional competitions, concerts and parades.
Sixteen members received scholarship offers for band to Hinds Community College, and eight members received offers to Mississippi State University, University of Mississippi, Jackson State University, University of Southern Mississippi, and University of Alabama.
Clinton Band is concluding its auditioning process for the 2019-20 year and will begin summer rehearsals in June to prepare for the marching season.
