CLINTON — When she learned that one of her students had asthma, physical education teacher Nikki Ruffin let her know that it was OK to take breaks if needed.

“My daughter ended up having an asthma attack during class,” said Eastside Elementary parent Tammie Stephens. “Coach Ruffin was so kind to help her and told her to take her inhaler. She kept an eye on her, telling her to calm down and breathe. When she didn’t get better she walked her to her homeroom teacher and they both walked her out to the car rider line to me before school dismissed. They both stayed by the car until my daughter was starting to feel better and the line started to move.”

Ruffin is the recipient of the Clinton Public School District’s Dedication of Our Valued Employees, or DOVE, customer service award for the month of October. She will be recognized at the school board meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Central Office.

As a DOVE Award winner, Ruffin will receive gift cards from Cock-of-the-Walk restaurant, Playtime Entertainment and Chick-fil-A of Clinton.

“It would have been very easy and certainly understandable for Coach Ruffin to bring my daughter to her homeroom teacher and go back to her class,” Stephens said. “But she didn’t do that. She stayed and accompanied my daughter. She went the extra mile.

“Sometimes PE can be very hard for my daughter and she’s always been nervous about disappointing her teacher. Coach Ruffin’s act of kindness made my daughter and myself feel completely comfortable and now she’s one of my child’s favorite teachers.”

The DOVE Award is given each month during the school year to an employee who goes above and beyond in showing customer service to students, parents and the community. A five-member DOVE award selection committee chooses each winner from a pool of nominations.

Anyone can nominate a CPSD employee via the online form on DOVE Award recipients will be formally recognized at school board meetings, on district announcements and in The Clinton Courier.
