CLINTON — Clinton’s public schools are among the highest achieving in Mississippi.
According to ratings released this week by the Mississippi Department of Education, the Clinton Public School District is an A-Rated district, the highest possible academic rating a Mississippi school district can attain. With its overall score of 711, CPSD is the fifth-highest achieving district statewide.
The annual A-District Celebration will be held at halftime of the Nov. 2 home football game vs. Starkville. All students, families and Arrow supporters are encouraged to attend.
“Our vision is ‘Excellence is the Only Option,’ and we work toward excellence every day,” said Dr. Tim Martin, superintendent of schools. “We have highly qualified teachers in every classroom and we set very high expectations for students.”
All schools in CPSD are rated A except Clinton Junior High which is a B. Clinton High School and Sumner Hill combined are the fifth-highest achieving high school in Mississippi, and are the only Jackson metro-area high school in the top 20.
Two elementary schools, Northside and Clinton Park, are ranked in the top 10 elementary schools statewide out of more than 600 schools.
The A-F grading system is set by state law, and is designed to inform parents and communities how well their schools are educating students.
The grading system considers several indicators, including how well students perform on state tests, whether students are showing improvement on those tests from year to year and whether students are graduating on time. The system also factors in how well schools are helping their lowest achieving students make progress toward proficiency.
Assistant Superintendent Anthony Goins said academic achievement is one of CPSD’s strategic plan goals.
“We have data from state test scores and benchmark testing that show strengths and areas for improvement for each student,” he said. “Teachers use this information to help students achieve at their best.”
