Engineering design course preps students for college, careers
CLINTON — Caleb Miller, an 11th grader at Clinton High School, is on track to become a mechanical engineer.
“I came into the Engineering Design class thinking this was something I wanted to pursue, and the class has solidified my career choice,” he said of the course at the CHS Career Complex. “Mr. (Justin) Odom walked us through the field of engineering. We have learned about designing things and put into practice the things we’re learning.”
Odom said his students are in the high school-level foundational course introduction to engineering design.
“Students have and will continue to use the engineering design process to complete structured activities and solve open-ended problems that require them to develop planning individually or in a group,” Odom said. “They keep documentation in their engineering notebooks and learn about communication and other professional skills.”
Students have done 2D and 3D technical drawings and kept documentation of design solutions according to accepted technical standards, he said.
“They are using 3D design and modeling software to represent and communicate solutions,” Odom said. “We have learned computational methods that are commonly used in engineering problem solving, including statistical analysis.”
A recent class project involved students designing and modeling a piece of yard art from scrap logs, limbs and plywood.
“It’s physical and hands-on,” Caleb said. “We put what we study into application.”
