AWARDS

Arrow Award

Given to one student who exhibits outstanding loyalty and service to Sumner Hill through activities and overall support of the school.


Citizenship Award

Given to one student who exhibits outstanding patriotism for his/her school, nation, and earth.


Hall of Fame

Given to four students who exhibit all-around qualities in academic performance, participate in two school-sponsored extracurricular activities, and show an exemplary attitude.

Many Points of Light Award

This award is sponsored by Entergy and is awarded to honor students who have excelled in biology and social studies classes. Additionally, honorees must have participated in at least one extra-curricular activity that revolves around the ecology of the school, community, or state.


Presidential Academic Fitness Program

Honors students who have a yearly academic average of ninety-five and above. Between sixty to 100 students (14-24% of the total enrollment) receive this prestigious award annually.


Sarah Dickey Award

This award is sponsored by FEA and is awarded to two students with overall exemplary attitudes, who, although faced with adversity, exhibit persistence in the pursuit of personal and academic goals. They also encourage the acceptance and understanding of others.

 

VIP Student Award

Award given each nine weeks to the two students with the highest academic average. They also must have received no disciplinary action during the nine week grading period. They are recognized in a scheduled activity period and are awarded a certificate of recognition and a gift of $25 by the school adopter Entergy.

 

Straight Arrow Award

Awarded to students each nine weeks for completing all class work and home work in all classes.

Exemplary Award

An award that recognizes good behavior and is given to student that do not receive any disciplinary action throughout the entire school year.

Boy's Basketball

Won the Little Six Championship ten times

Girl's Basketball

Won the Little Six Championship three times

Football

Won the Little Six Championship in 1987, 1992, and 1997

Cheerleaders

First competed in the MHSAA sponsored cheerleading competition during school year 1996-97 where they earned first place. Subsequent squads have placed in the top three with the 2004-05 squad once again earning first place.

Band and Choir

Participate in state and regional competitions and consistently score superior ratings. The main goal of the musical programs at SHJHS is to continue growth in both musical knowledge and musical ability. The choir is divided into a mixed choir, girls choir, boys choir, and various ensembles. Performances include several concerts for the Clinton community as well as competitions both inside and outside of Mississippi. The highlight of this year’s competitive season is a performance at Universal Studios in April. The band competes at the Alamo Showcase.


Language Arts Department

Encourages all students to participate in a variety of essay and poetry contests. Sumner Hill students have consistently placed in the county, district, and state Soil and Water Conservation essay contest. Three times in the last four years, the state winner for the 9th-10th grade was from Sumner Hill. In 2004, a Sumner Hill student earned recognition for placing first in the state in the annual “Laws of Life” essay contest. Each year several students earn recognition in national poetry contests. Since 1996 at least one student per year has had work published at the national level.


In addition, students enrolled in Spanish I and French I participate in the Foreign Language Fair each year. Foreign language students have consistently placed in academic testing and project competition.


The Safety Club

Safety Club has been named Mississippi’s Most Outstanding Youth Group, J. C. Penney Golden Rule Award Winner, National Student Safety Program Outstanding Youth Group, and National Safety Council Youth Safety Award. The Safety Club is an active participant of Teens on the Move, and members have been elected to offices in the National Student Safety Program.

Biology Department

Science Fair gives our biology students a chance to shine. Each year winners in our local science fair advance to the district and state levels. From 2004 -2006, Sumner Hill received the award for achieving more points than any other school at the district level.

TSA

The Technology Student Association is a national vocational club that gives students the opportunity to gain leadership skills as well as compete in local, state, and national events. All members obtain state and national affiliation.
