Lovett's exploratory classes are one of the ways we demonstrate our motto "bridging the gap." During the school year students will spend twelve weeks in each of the three exploratory classes: art, music, and physical education. Art, music and P.E. are nongraded classes. The student will receive an S, I, or U on their report card. For those students interested in participating in the strings program, go to the link below to learn about the requirements and scheduling of the classes.
ART
The teaching of art in the elementary school today is a richly rewarding and highly fulfilling experience when it is done with purpose, enthusiasm, planning, understanding and patience. It is indeed a privilege to observe children as they create in paint, crayon, pastel, clay, yarn, paper and found materials. Children who express their responses, ideas, and reactions with honesty and sensitivity in a framework of compositional design create art. Every time children create a work of art, they are encouraged to evaluate their effort from stage to stage in the creative process, always beginning with the initial drawing.
Students will be learning the fundamental principles of art and balance as well as becoming acquainted with great artists such as Henri Matisse, Paul Klee and Karen Appe as an element of art appreciation.
MUSIC
Music classes at Lovett offer students the opportunity to listen to various types of music, participate in unison and two part singing, use body movement while singing, and perform at the end of their twelve-week rotation in a thematic program.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The objective of the P.E. program is to teach effective motor, social, and cognitive skills in individuals through activities involving team sports. Individual sports and strategic games are also implemented. Physical fitness aspects such as strength, agility, and conditioning are improved daily as the child participates in daily activities.
The P.E. program is active each year with the American Heart Association by participating in "Hoops-4-Hearts" which is a fundraising event where all proceeds go towards the fight against heart disease.
The multi-purpose gym allows students to participate in P.E. no matter what the weather is like outside. Rain or shine, hot or cold - P.E. is a great way for students to get in shape and sharpen their athletic skills.
