COUNSELING PROGRAMS
"Be the best you can be!"

The academic curriculum at Lovett is supported by the guidance department through character education, Red Ribbon Week, group guidance and individual counseling. Character education highlights a specific trait or quality each month by showing a video from the Book of Virtues series. As reinforcement a "Caught Ya Being Good" program encourages staff to recognize students who are "caught" in the act of showing good character. Their names are placed in a weekly drawing and the winners enjoy recognition for positive behavior and receive rewards.
Caught-You-Being Good Winners

Red Ribbon Week is observed each October as a reminder to live a healthy lifestyle based on making positive choices and resisting negative peer pressure. This message is relayed through theme days, writing pledges, making posters, wearing red ribbons, and participating in activities such as kickball tournaments i.e. "Get a Kick Out of Being Drug Free." Theme days use various activities to communicate messages i.e. students wear their favorite sports team shirts as a reminder to "Team Up Against Drugs."

Classroom guidance is provided weekly with the emphasis on helping students work with and improve their relationships with others. Each week students are introduced to a social or "people" skill such as making and keeping friends, effective communication, assuming responsibility for actions, and respecting self and others. They discuss the need for this skill, how to acquire or improve upon it, and then practice and role play. Their assignment is to use the skill during the next week and tell the class what they did and how it was received.

Individual counseling is done by request and as needed. New students are invited to a newcomers breakfast and orientation to Lovett. A support team also is in place for individual needs.

These activities are done with the intent or goal of meeting students' needs in order for them to fulfill their potential, live healthy lifestyles, and enjoy rewarding relationships with others.
