ART IV

In Art IV we spend a large part of the year working on individual needs of study.  During the first semester, each student is encouraged to focus on a certain area.  By the end of the year, they should have a body of work for a portfolio.

This student decided to explore acrylic painting as the main medium of her portfolio.  She centered her pieces around a trip to the reservoir with a childhood friend from Spain (seen pictured in Leaps and Bounds) and with her sister and nieces.  She wanted to capture the feeling of summer in the colors and textures of her paintings.  Other than the five acrylic paintings, this student did two pieces, one in oil pastel of a crane, and another of a friend as a collage.  She completed seven new paintings during the semester and did a great job keeping the portfolio cohesive.

The natural essence of  beauty, was this student’s choice for an area of focus.  In her work, she emphasizes the rarity of perceived beauty in common objects, recognizing their beauty as a form of art.  Her portfolio reflects this view, incorporating the beauty of art found in nature, music, culture, and childhood.

Although this student uses a variety of media, acrylic is her primary medium, to give ordinary activities a new perspective.  What better way is there to start off a Saturday morning with pancakes with one’s family or a trip in the car?  The artist’s love for summer time and sunshine is discretely placed throughout by the sunroof in one piece, and shorts and temperature gage in two more pieces.  Summer is a time for traveling, relaxing, and just enjoying the simple pleasures in life.
