ART I
Crayon Resist
In class we talked about how
during the Middle Ages clerics and scribes would work
tirelessly on pages of manuscripts for the church and for kings. They would
decorate or illuminate the first letter in a paragraph. These “miniature paintings” were considered
some of the best art during the Middle Ages or Gothic
time. After talking about different
styles of letters and various types of color schemes (analogous, triad, double complementary, split complementary), the students created “their
own illumination” using crayons and black tempera paint on 12” x 18” paper.

In this activity, the class
talked about different layouts and composition.
After working on at least three different thumbnail sketches, the
students enlarged their “favorite”. They
were given a sheet of 12” x 18” paper, scissors, glue, and the black and white
sections of magazines. Good job!
