ARROWFEST 2007

 

Started in the spring of 2006, Arrowfest is an annual event (for several weeks) where the “arts” in the Clinton Public Schools are “recognized and celebrated”. The following is the Arrowfest 2007 calendar, information on the Arrowfest speakers, and pictures of some of the activities.

Speakers for Arrowfest 2007

 

Ralph Miller

Speaking and singing on April 16 - Ralph Miller, a Vicksburg native, is a fantastic acoustic guitar player and singer/songwriter who currently lives in the Belhaven area of Jackson, Mississippi. His music includes classics and oldies from the 60s, 70s, and 80s in the likes of Gordon Lightfoot, the Eagles, and James Taylor. In the fall of 2006 he released his most current album, Mississippi Moonlight. Ralph can be found playing local gigs at the Haute Pig in Madison, Brent’s Grocery in Jackson, Archestrautus Grill in Clinton, and Barrillo’s  in Vicksburg, among many other locations. He is also often booked for private parties and weddings.

 

Bob Allen Dunaway

Arrowfest speaker for April 17 – Bob Dunaway -  His versatility is evident in his sculptures, watercolors and assemblages.   Also known for his silhouettes, calligraphy, and illustrations, Dunaway works in both fine art and commercial art modes. Bob has taught in several locations – one of them -   serving  as Art Department chair at Hinds  and being named Mississippi Art Educator of the Year in 1984.  His works are included in public and private art collections across the country. In the “Art Talk”, Bob talked about and demonstrated “Latex Mold Making”.

 

Teresa Boone

Our Arrowfest speaker Wednesday, April 18 -  Teresa Boone with Rees Designs.  Teresa attended and received a BA,  a  MA and an  Education Specialist Degree from Mississippi Collage.  She taught art at Callaway High School for 12 years and started a screen printing business in a barn in 1983.  Her screen printing business, Rees Designs,has  grown and  is  now located on Hwy 80.  Rees Designs has a design staff specializing in screen printing for advertising agencies and private groups.  Even though a large part of her business is done for Mississippians, she has  printed and shipped work overseas. 

 

Chad Chisholm

Arrowfest speaker for Friday, April 20 - Basil Chadwick Chisholm teaches English at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. His family moved to Clinton, Mississippi in April 1985 when he was six years old, and he graduated from Clinton High School in 1996. Chad went on the earn degrees from The University of Mississippi in 2000 and Clemson University in 2004. Chad is the author of Clinton (Arcadia Publishing). His book is a pictorial history of his hometown and is, as of 2007, the only historical book on Clinton, Mississippi currently in print. Chad is presently working on a second history of Clinton with Arcadia Publishing.

 

Cordelia Godfrey

Speaker for Monday, April 30 -Cordelia Godfrey teaches English and African American Literature at Clinton High School.  She is a graduate of Milsaps College with a BA in English.  She did graduate work at Mississippi College and Jackson State University.  She teaches adjunct English courses at Hinds Community College, and she teaches Porcelain Doll Making at Jackson State University for Kids Kollege.  Cordelia has been a doll maker for the last 20 years, and owns her own company Godfrey's Gallery.  She recently converted her two-story home to her own private doll's house where she teaches doll making, sells doll making supplies, and showcases dolls from the 1930's to the 1970's.  She is not only a doll maker,but she is also a doll collector.

 

Sherri Ottis

Arrowfest speaker for Tuesday, May 1 - Sherri Ottis is a World History at Clinton High School and the author of the book Silent Heroes: Downed Airmen and the French Underground. The book is a true account of the airmen who were shot down over western Europe during World War II and the people who helped them evade capture by the Germans.  During trips to Europe, she spoke with people who served time in concentration camps for their work as part of the resistance, visited the places where they did their work, and retraced the evacuation route of airmen from Belgium to Spain, crossing the Pyrenees Mountains on foot. She has also had numerous articles published in the Air Forces Escape and Evasion quarterly magazine.

 

Karen Fowler

Speaker for Wednesday, May 2 -Karen Fowler is a retired art instructor from Clinton who taught for 35 years, 25 of those at Clinton High School. Over the years she has studied and taught a wide variety of styles and media.  She will be showing a demonstration of handmade paper and showing projects that have been done using handmade paper.  Mrs.  Fowler’s interest in papermaking came from a trip to the New Orleans French Market many years ago where artists were selling delicate note cards and envelopes made from pressed wild flowers, lace and paper pulp.

 

Lee Dunlap

Final Arrowfest speaker for 2007 -Lee Dunlap is an accomplished watercolor painter and photographer residing in Clinton, Mississippi. He considers himself somewhat of a cowboy, spending his spare time photographing bull rides/fights at local and out of state rodeos. Often he will use his rodeo photographs from which to paint watercolor paintings of riders and bulls in action. Lee received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Mississippi College and is currently employed as an art instructor at Hinds Community College in Raymond

Each class worked in groups and had 1 class period to start and finish their design.  Each work was approximately 5’ x 6’.  This activity in Arrowfest not only excited the students drawing, but the onlookers as well!!

There were many entries for the Arrowfest t-shirt design contest. It was open to any CHS student.   First, second, third, and honorable mention were named.  Each of the finalist received a free Arrowfest t-shirt and the first place winner also received $20.  The back of the winning design is below.
